NUCLEOTIDE SEQUENCE ANALYSIS

Congratulations! The laboratory confirms DNA is present. It has successfully analyzed two gene sequences. In this activity you will submit the sequences to the NCBI data base for analysis. Your sequences will be compared to other known genetic sequences from various species. Based upon sequence similarities, you will try to identify the source of your tissue sample.

Directions for performing a data base analysis. Follow these directions for each gene (nucleotide sequence).

  1. Copy the sequence below.
  2. Link to the NCBI site above.
  3. Click on "Basic Blast Search."
  4. Paste the sequence into the box.
  5. Click on "Search."
  6. Click on "Format Results." After a short time, a sequence analysis will appear. Scroll down and review the information. If the DNA sequence matches any other known sequences in the data base, the hits will appear in order of the most similar nucleotide sequence matches. Analyze this information and answer the questions in Show Your Stuff, Activity 2. Review the team page to divide the labor if you are working with a partner.
