Lesson Title: Roller Coaster Bolster

Curricular Area: Physical Science, Grade 8

Objectives:

Using the Problem-based learning method, students will learn about physical science concepts addressed in the standards such as friction, motion, speed, velocity, acceleration, momentum, inertia, potential and kinetic energy, gravity, and g forces. They will make comparisons of different roller coasters using online databases and their own calculations. Once they draw their conclusions, they will present their findings to the "board of directors". In doing so, they will have to review the physical science concepts, their calculations, and how to best communicate them. This project encourages teamwork.
